Festivals of Nepal:

Festivals of Nepal has always been a meaningful event where people enjoy themselves more through their direct involvement than just watching them. In Nepal, every festival has some purpose to serve, such as to bring rain or to have good harvest, to avert calamities and so on. In fact, festivals are the best way to understand and appreciate the Nepalese way of life. They are listed in below.

Hindu Festivals:  

Baisak Purnima or the New years day: the Nepalese new year’s day usually falls in the second week of April. The day is Observed as a National holiday. The occasion, Bisket Jatra is held in the city of Bhaktapur.

Ghodejatra: the horse festival celebreat between March and April. Celebrated in Kathmandu by the Nepal Army.

Rato Machchendranath Rath Jatra: celebrated in May-June. The biggest socio-cultural event of Patan. The wheeled chariot of a deity dragged through the city of Paran is several till if reaches the destined location (Lagankhel) by many people.

Janaipurnima: celebrated in August, in which Hindu changes sacred threads and take a holy bath.

Gaijatra: celebrates in July-August it is a carnival that eight days. 

Krishnastami: celebrates in July-August it marks the birthday of lord Krishna. 

Teej: Celebrates in August-September. The Hindu festival celebrates by women, dancing folk song and the goddess songs and prays, wears new and pure red weeding saris dominate the days of Teej.

Indrajatra: celebrates in August-September. The festival of god Indra, ‘god of rain’ in the occation chariot of Kumari the living Goddess, tken out in procession through the main streets of Kathmandu.

Dashain (Durga puja): celebrates in October-November. This festival is the major festival of the Nepalese.the Dashain celebration matks the victory good evil. Durga Bhawani is the emblem of the good. Durga conquered evils this days. Huge amount of animal sacrifice take place during the day festivals in temples and in home to please the Goddess, Durga.

Tihar: the festival of Lightning: it celebrates for 5 days. In October-November. It is one of the most dazzling of all Hindu festivals. Probably in other world it is called this festival is meant for life and prosperity. 

Chhath: Maithili-speaking people mainly celebrates this festival in Terai. the six days following festival of Laxmi Puja.

Maha Shivartri: the night of the lord Shiva in February-March. A grat religious fair takes place in the Pashupatinath temple and thousands of peoples from all over Nepal, India, Sri lanka, Burma etc.

Maghe Sankrati: Fagu Purnima (Holi): celebrates in February-March. The color full festival mainly people smear each other with colored power and splash water Ballons onto another. Its great fun. 

Chaite Dashain: celebrates in March-April. Red vermilion power, family blessings, and goat and duck sacrifices are essential to praise the victory of Ram, the hero of the epic Ramayana, over evil king Ravan. The mother god Durga, the source of all power must be supplicated to helped Ram achieve his victory. 

BUDDHIST FESTIVAL: 

Lhosar: Lhosar is the most impressively observed in the month of  February by Sherpas. they  organize folk songs and dances on this occasion. In Khumbu, Helambu and other northern regions of Nepal and in Bouddhanath area of Kathmandu.

Buddha Jayanti: ever-benevolent Buddha wasbjorn in Neapl and the religion. His preaching is second most popular in the Kingdom. On full moon day the Lords birth enlightenment and salvation are applauded throughout the valley with grand celebrations. 

Matayaa:  a local Buddhist festival of Patan, celebrates in August. A crowd of devotees, playing music and dancing fo round all the Chaityas. 

Mani-Rimbu: during May, it is a Sherpa’s Dramas performed in the Khumbu region. At Tyangboche gumba. 

Dumje: it is  birth celebration of Guru Rimbboche (Padmasambhava) that takes place in June in Khumbu and Mustang region.

Yartung: it falls in the full moon Aug-Sept. the majority of the local Tibetan villagers of the valley hold a grat horse festival, called Yartung-a time of horse racing, gambling and general merriment.  

The Muslims majority also finds in Nepal. Their festivals and the cultural   goes as like the all muslins around the world. Among 7.7 % of the population is goes in total.
